Top national appointment for York Professor of Health Economics

A University of York academic has been appointed to the Board of the national body responsible for health and social care data collection, analysis and dissemination in England.

Professor Maria Goddard is one of three new Non-Executive Directors appointed to join the Board of the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC).

Director of York’s Centre for Health Economics and Professor of Health Economics, Professor Goddard has a long track record in research and has also gained policy experience in posts in the NHS at health authority level and then as a civil servant and  Economic Adviser in the NHS Executive (Department of Health).

Her current research interests in health policy include the measurement of performance, commissioning, mental health, the role of incentives and the regulation of health care systems.

Professor Goddard said: “I am delighted to join the HSCIC Board.  I look forward to playing a part in the future agenda of the HSCIC as it strives to improve patient services, care and outcomes through its role as trusted national provider of high-quality information, data and IT systems for health and social care.”

Professor Goddard is a Fellow of The Learned Society of Wales and an elected member of the Women’s Committee of the Royal Economic Society. .

She has acted as an adviser and consultant to the OECD, World Bank, World Health Organisation and the Audit Commission, and is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Health Services Research and Policy, and for BMC Health Services Research.

HSCIC is responsible for collecting, analysing and presenting national health and social care data, including setting up and managing national IT systems. It also publishes a set of rules (Code of Practice) to set out how the personal confidential information of patients should be handled and managed by health and care staff and organisations.

Professor Goddard, Sir John Chisholm, Executive Chair Genomics England Ltd and Jan Ormondroyd, former Chief Executive of Bristol City Council, are joining Sir Ian Andrews and Sir Nick Partridge as Non-Executive Directors.
