Students focus on York faces for Tour de France festival

Posted on 24 January 2014

Plans for a giant photo mosaic, made up of the faces of York residents, students and tourists, have been drawn up by University of York students as part of a Tour de France cultural festival.

The student-inspired ‘Faces of York’ project will use the photographs to construct an image of last year’s Tour winner Chris Froome racing through the French countryside, against a Union Jack backdrop.

The image will be made up of hundreds of passport-style photographs gathered over the next few months in special booths set up by the students in the city centre and on campus. The students plan to display the final image in the city centre during York’s Tour de France 100 Day Cultural Festival  in the run up to Le Grand Depart from York on 6 July.

‘Faces of York’ is just one of a range of student projects supported by the University Community Fund, sponsored by The Shepherd Group, to mark the Tour’s visit to the city.

Other projects include a Latin-American themed flash mob dance routine performed in the city centre and a plan to combine science and cycling by staging educational events and activities on the city’s Solar System Cycle route.

The student teams pitched their ideas at an event in York’s Mansion House, hosted by the Lord Mayor of York Julie Gunnell.

Careers staff at the University of York are working with City of York Council to develop the projects.

Sarah Leith from Careerssaid: “This is a fantastic opportunity for the students to get involved in the celebrations for one of the world’s greatest sporting events – and it gives them a chance to develop valuable leadership and team working skills.

“The students have come up with some really creative and innovative ideas that will help bring the cultural festival to life for communities across the city.”
