Eleanor Bartley, a final year English Literature student, is the University of York Student Internship Bureau’s ‘Intern of the Year’.

Completing an internship at TSYS, a global leader in payments processing in Fulford, Eleanor’s project was to develop and introduce a Competitor Analysis system.

Eleanor was in competition with fellow interns Sally Hoolin and Hayley Macdonald. Sally is a final year History of Art student who conducted a marketing and communications intern project with Animalcare, a York-based company specialising in animal health products.  Hayley is a final year Politics student who undertook a project developing Network Rail’s sustainability plan.

Commenting on the impact of Eleanor’s project, Morgan Beard, Director of Strategic Marketing at TSYS, said: “I could get to 80 percent of this information, but it would take me three weeks, a dozen phone calls and a lot of follow up. Now, I get a report in three minutes and get 100 percent of the information I need.”

A celebration event, organised by the University of York’s Careers service, marked the close of the summer internship scheme launched in March 2014 by Professor Colin Mellors. Professor Mellors congratulated all of the 63 students who had undertaken internships within 34 different local businesses during the summer vacation.

Many host organisations that use the Student Internship Bureau to access talented and enthusiastic students also attended.  Regular host organisations include the Food and Environment Research Agency, The Joseph Rowntree Foundation, Rapita Systems, City of York Council, and those new to the scheme include Network Rail, Guided Solutions and Solarwall.

TSYS were also recognised with a special prize of ‘Internship Host of the Year’ for the exceptional support of their two summer interns, Eleanor Bartley and Owen Hurford.  TSYS follow in the footsteps of financial services company Garbutt and Elliott who secured this award in 2013.

Further information

  • The Student Internship Bureau (SIB), based in Careers at the University of York, runs a rolling programme of internships throughout the year and can provide businesses with a cost-effective and flexible way of accessing the talents of students from one of the UK’s leading universities. Student internships deliver self-contained pieces of work with specific outputs agreed by the host organisation. In the academic year 2013-14 the Student Internship Bureau brokered 178 internship projects with businesses based in the local community, and with the University’s own departments and services.
  • Thanks to a generous gift from Santander, Careers is also able to offer small and medium sized businesses up to £1500 towards engaging the skills of a full-time graduate of the University through a project-based internship of up to 12 weeks in duration.
