Music students tune up for York hospice fundraiser

Posted on 11 December 2013

A student jazz band from the University of York is tuning up to entertain guests at the 2014 Sunflower Ball in aid of St Leonard’s Hospice.

The Ricardo Alvarez Quartet will take to the stage in front of hundreds of guests at the major fund raising event at York Racecourse on Saturday 10 May. This is the fourth time students from the University’s Department of Music have provided entertainment at the event.

The University’s Director of Commercial Services Jon Greenwood, a keen racing driver, is also providing a charity auction prize offering a day at Oulton Park motor racing circuit including driving instruction in a Ginetta G20 racing car and race day tickets.

Jon Greenwood said: “St Leonard’s Hospice is one of our most important local charities and the University of York is happy to support their valuable work.”

Over 500 guests attended the last Sunflower Ball in 2012 which raised over £56,000 for hospice funds. St Leonard’s Hospice in York provides palliative care to people with life threatening illnesses.  It needs to raise over £3m a year from donations and local fund raising events to cover daily running costs.
