100th patient benefits from MRI scan at the University of York

Posted on 22 August 2012

An engineer from Hull has become the 100th patient to benefit from diagnosis using a powerful £1.5 million MRI scanner at the University of York.

David Fisher, 56, was referred by his local chiropractor to YNi Ltd, part of the University’s York Neuroimaging Centre, for a diagnostic scan after suffering a painful ankle injury.

As a marine warranty surveyor, David Fisher boards and inspects ships and offshore structures all round the world, so physical health and mobility are vital.

Thanks to the speed of service, high quality images and comprehensive radiologist’s report provided by YNi Ltd, he quickly received the appropriate treatment.

David Fisher said: “I have a professional job which is very demanding and I need to be fit. Having the MRI has given peace of mind to my family and I and helped me to quickly get on with my life.”

Since November 2011, YNi Ltd has offered a clinical MRI screening service to people from across the Yorkshire and the Humber region using the University’s 3 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanner. Twice as powerful as the average hospital scanner, it is primarily used for research purposes.

MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves to obtain highly detailed images of any part of the body and is particularly useful for the brain, spine and joints. It is a very safe procedure which poses no known health risks.

Professor Gary Green, Director of the York Neuroimaging Centre, said: “The MRI scanner is mainly used for research purposes and we are able to offer any spare capacity for clinical use through our commercial arm, YNi Ltd.

The staff are professional and cordial, the facilities are excellent and the MRI scanner is really impressive

“By doing so, we are providing local patients like Mr Fisher with access to advanced health technology and offering peace of mind at an affordable price. There are no waiting lists and we aim to perform scans within five working days of referral, with the report being dispatched within three working days. Often the process is much quicker and we have seen patients on the day of referral.”

YNi Ltd receives referrals from physiotherapists, chiropractors and osteopaths, usually because of lower back pain, or problems with knees, shoulders, ankles or hips. Practitioners often refer patients because they are not responding to a management programme, or because the patient requires very quick diagnosis and treatment, perhaps because they have a physical job.

Mr Fisher said: “My chiropractor recommended I have an MRI scan and suggested YNi Ltd. The service is excellent and everything is made really easy. I hadn’t returned to my house from the chiropractor before they were on the phone offering me an appointment. That’s a service I haven’t experienced before.

“The staff are professional and cordial, the facilities are excellent and the MRI scanner is really impressive. I thoroughly recommend YNi Ltd.”

Dr Guy Gosselin, from East Yorkshire Chiropractic Clinics, said: “It is with total confidence that we routinely refer our patients in need of MRI scans to the York Diagnostic Imaging Centre, YNi Ltd. The staff are kind and attentive, the facilities are modern and clean, and the quality and turnaround time of reporting is second to none. It is a pleasure to work with York Diagnostic Imaging.”

YNi Ltd has its own dedicated MRI radiographer, Ross Devlin. He said: “The majority of the referrals we receive are for spinal and joint injuries. In two cases since November 2011 we have detected previously unsuspected cancers. We have also performed scans on NHS patients referred by neurologists who wished to make use of the high-powered equipment for diagnosis.”
