Event aims to dispel confusion over student finance

Hosted by the Higher York partners – the University of York, York St John University, York College and Askham Bryan College – Money Matters 2012 aims to dispel some of the confusion surrounding changes to student finance.

The event on Monday, 14 November is part of a national Student Finance Day, which is headed by consumer campaigner Martin Lewis of MoneySavingExpert.com. The day will feature local universities and colleges across the country working together to ensure prospective students, their parents, teachers and the media all understand the implications of the new student finance system in England from 2012.
Simon Willis, the University of York’s Director of Admissions, said: “The aim of the national Student Finance Day is to ensure people understand exactly how the new student finance package works and dispel some of the myths which might make people think that university is not for them.
“One of our main aims at York is to make prospective students aware of the support available within universities, colleges and student unions and where they can go to access this financial support. Having this information will allow them to make an informed decision about progression to university or college.”
The York event is free and open to prospective students, parents and advisors. It will cover the cost of higher education, Government funding 2012 and funding available from the four Higher York partnership institutions. There will also be an opportunity to talk to advisers from the four institutions.
The free event will be held in the University’s Heslington West campus at the Exhibition Centre, room PL001, on 14 November from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. There is no need to book.
