Clinic offers free legal advice

Student advisers, who are studying Law at the University, are on hand to offer advice on issues ranging from problems claiming benefits, to setting up a new business, to difficulties at home, work or school.

Anyone from York and the surrounding area is welcome to make an appointment with one of the advisors for free, confidential advice.
Richard Grimes, a qualified solicitor and the University's Director of Clinical Programmes, said: "The clinic provides an opportunity for the students to gain experience and put theory into practice. At the same time it offers a free and professional service focusing on areas where people may find it difficult to find or afford other legal services.
"We aim to hit the standards required of any solicitor and everything the clinic does is overseen by experienced staff. We cannot guarantee to help in every case but if we can, we will."
The clinic is based in the York Law School which opened last year as part of the new £750m Heslington East campus expansion.
Student advisers will interview clients, find out their concerns and look into these. After consulting with professional lawyers, they will then advise clients of their position and what they may be able to do.
