Chinese education pioneer visits the University of York

One of China's leading specialists in science education will visit the University of York today.

A former Deputy Minister in the Ministry of Education, Professor Yu Wei, is now Vice-Director of Committee of Education, Science, Culture, Health and Sports in the 10th Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

She will visit the Centre for Innovation and Research in Science Education in the Department of Educational Studies where she will meet senior members of staff as well as the University's Vice-Chancellor Professor Brian Cantor.

Professor Wei, who was awarded an Honorary Degree by the University earlier this year, will also see a range of teaching materials from each of the Centre's major curriculum projects.

Later, she will visit the York Neuroimaging Centre on the York Science Park and the Centre for Reading and Language in the University’s Department of Psychology.

Professor Wei has 40 years' experience in Electronics as a teacher and a researcher and she was the first Chinese woman to achieve a doctorate in the discipline. She is the Director of the Research Centre of Learning Sciences, Southeast University, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Vice-Chairperson of the Chinese Association of Science and Technology.

She was educated at Nanjing College of Science, Nanjing Institute of Technology and Aachen Technical University. She established China's first molecular and bioelectronic laboratory, and introduced 'Learning by Doing' science education programmes in China. As Deputy Minister of Education from 1993 to 2002, she played a significant role in promoting the construction of China's education networks and the development of remote education.
