York’s concerts programme goes on stream

Posted on 4 May 2010

The Department of Music at the University of York is breaking new ground by streaming a selection of its concerts online.

It is the first University music department in the country to stream concerts on a regular basis. The Department is planning to stream up to 20 concerts a year, including all those performed by the University’s ensembles.

The new service, which already has more than 100 regular users, is free. But viewers are given the opportunity of making contributions towards the cost of a refurbishment of the Department’s most frequently used auditorium, the Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall.

Now anybody can enjoy the music from York wherever they are in the world

Music technician Aaron Carey, who played a key role in setting up the new system, said: “We want the concerts to be available to as wide an audience as possible.  Already, just by word of mouth, the service is proving popular. Now anybody can enjoy the music from York wherever they are in the world.”

The University’s Concerts Administrator Celia Frisby added: “This is an exciting way of sharing our concert season with a wider audience.  Selected professional performances and our own student ensembles will give people a taste of the high quality of music on offer here at the University.  It’s also a great way for the families and friends of students, and for prospective students, to keep in contact with the department.”

The first streamed concert this term is on 5 May in the Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall when The Chamber Players perform a programme of pieces by Bartok, Debussy, Stravinsky and Messiaen.

The concerts are available at www.york.ac.uk/music/lyonslive/.
