York recognised as world top 100 university

Posted on 16 September 2010

The University of York has consolidated its position among the world’s elite universities, in two rankings released this month.

The University is 81st in the 2010-11 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, and is one of only 14 UK universities that make the top 100. Earlier this month, the University was ranked 88th in the 2010 QS World University Rankings – only 11 UK universities appear in both world rankings.

To have attained this position in less than 50 years is a rare achievement.

The University's Vice-Chancellor Professor Brian Cantor said: "The University of York is in the top 100 of both the THE and the QS 2010 world rankings, confirming our status as one of the world's foremost universities. Our performance reflects great credit on the dedication and hard work of all our staff and illustrates the international esteem in which the University is held."

Ann Mroz, editor of the Times Higher Education, congratulated the University on its performance in the rankings of the best 200 of the world’s 30,000 universities.

"Being ranked 81 in the world top 200 is an impressive achievement. The top 200 universities in the world represent only a tiny fraction of world higher education and any institution that makes it into this table is truly world class."
