Understanding how music moves us

Posted on 30 April 2010

The emotional power of music will be explored by experts gathering at the University of York next week.

Academics from a range of disciplines will consider the role of words, music and physiology in music-evoked emotion and discuss how research can progress in this area.

The event “The Power of Music – Yorkshire Music and Science Colloquium 2010” is hosted by the Departments of Music and Psychology and will feature speakers from Sheffield, Durham and Belfast as well as York.

Dr Marcel Zentner, from the Department of Psychology, said: “Over the last ten years researchers in fields as diverse as neuroscience, psychology, evolutionary biology, medicine, and computer sciences have become increasingly interested in understanding how we respond to music both psychologically and physiologically.

“An area of particular interest is our emotional response to music and this event will be an opportunity to explore this from a range of different perspectives.”

The colloquium, which is open to the public, will take place from 1.30pm on 4 May in the Venables Room in the Department of Psychology and from 9.30am on 5 May in the Rymer Auditorium in the Music Research Centre.
