Trust awards scholarships to talented students

Posted on 8 September 2010

A dozen students from Yorkshire and the Humber, who will start courses at some of the UK's top universities this autumn, are to receive £1,000 scholarships from York-based, The Holbeck Charitable Trust to help with their studies.

Through the scholarships, the Trust, which supports a range of charitable activities, aims to help bright and motivated young people to realise their aspirations.

One of the charity's trustees, Francesca Horsfield, will present the awards to the successful candidates at a ceremony hosted at the King's Manor in York tomorrow.

The guest speaker will be author and screenwriter Anthony Horowitz, who is a York alumnus and who was awarded an Honorary Degree by the University earlier this summer.

Working in partnership with The Excellence Hub for Yorkshire and Humber – a programme, delivered by the universities of York, Sheffield, Leeds and Hull – the charity awarded 12 one-off scholarships.

More than 600 young people living in the region applied for the scholarships, which are not intended to fund any particular aspect of the student's university life. They are a reward for hard work and academic excellence, in the face of adversity.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor at York, Professor Trevor Sheldon, said: "The University of York and The Holbeck Charitable Trust are committed to supporting talented pupils in overcoming challenging circumstances. Through these scholarships the Trust is publicly acknowledging the talent and hard work of these exceptional young people as well as giving the recipients a boost in the next phase of their careers."
