York nurse researcher wins award to study US healthcare

Posted on 15 June 2009

A nurse researcher who works in the University of York’s Department of Health Sciences and the Hull York Medical School has been awarded a sought-after Harkness Fellowship to study healthcare policy and practice in the USA.

The Fellowships are given by the Commonwealth Fund, a US charitable organisation and sponsored in the UK by the Nuffield Trust.

I am going to look at how nurses use health information technology systems in the US and the impact that they have on the quality of care

Dr Dawn Dowding

She is one of four UK fellows who will spend a year doing research in the US health care sector. Dr Dawn Dowding will be working at Kaiser Permanente, the USA’s largest not-for-profit health plan, which is based in Northern California.

“This is a fantastic opportunity. I am going to look at how nurses use health information technology systems in the US and the impact that they have on the quality of care,” she said.

Her husband, John, and three-year-old son, Idwal, will accompany her to the USA.

During the placement, she will visit health policymakers in the US, including Senators and members of the House of Representatives, and give a presentation at a healthcare conference.

At the end of the Fellowship, she will write a paper for a major health journal. She will also be reporting on her experiences and reflections on US policy through personal blogs on the Nuffield Trust website (www.nuffieldtrust.org.uk).
