University of York improves top ten ranking

Posted on 11 September 2009

The University of York maintained its top ten position of UK universities in the new Sunday Times University Guide.

York is eighth in the newspaper's 2009 league table of more than 100 UK institutions, an improvement of one place over 2008.

This superb ranking owes much to the huge dedication and hard work of all our staff

Excellent teaching and “an exceptional show in the national student satisfaction survey” helped to improve York’s UK ranking, while also consolidating its position as Yorkshire’s top university.

The Sunday Times says: “York is highly rated by students, staff, academic peers and head teachers alike. It also competes on an international playing field in terms of research, with the latest research assessment exercise confirming its standing as one of the top 10 universities in Britain and one of the top 100 in the world.”

The newspaper adds that with four in five students recruited from state schools, and one in six from working-class backgrounds, York is the most socially diverse top-10 university.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Brian Cantor, said: "This further confirms York’s continuing position as one of the UK's foremost universities. We have been consistently ranked in the top ten of university league tables in the last 15 years .

“Our academic excellence is reflected in the high level of satisfaction among our students and we are proud to be the most socially diverse top ten university. This superb ranking owes much to the huge dedication and hard work of all our staff."
