University course turns knowledge into new business

Posted on 11 December 2009

A new course from the York Management School will help experienced professionals turn their expertise into a new business opportunity.

The one-day course analyses the growing range of business consulting opportunities that are available and offers insights into the best way to exploit them.

Dr John McCabe, who has more than 20 years experience of the consulting industry, will lead the ‘How to Start and Run a Profitable Consulting Business’ course on 11 January at Heslington Hall on the University campus.

He said: “I am often asked the best way to kick-start a career as an independent consultant by managers who are looking to do something different, enjoy more job flexibility and make more money. “I have developed this course both from my experiences of working for international management consultancies and from running my own consulting business for those considering a similar career change.”

The full cost of the course is £350 but subsidies of up to 100 per cent for individuals and 60 per cent for businesses are available. This is possible due to support from the Higher Education Funding Council for England’s Economic Challenge Investment Fund and regional development agency Yorkshire Forward.

Ruth Adams, Director for Skills at Yorkshire Forward, said: “We have a strong track record in investing in education and skills. This financial support will allow more people to benefit from the University’s expertise and go on to develop exciting new careers.”
