Posted on 22 December 2009

Two University of York academics have been awarded industry fellowships in recognition of their standing as world leaders in their respective fields.

Professor John McDermid, Head of the Department of Computer Science, and Professor Keith Hartley, from the Centre for Defence Economics, have been awarded the title of Honorary Fellow by QinetiQ.

It is an enormous honour to be awarded this Fellowship, and I am very pleased that my work has been recognised by an industry leader

Professor John McDermid

The Honorary Fellowship scheme recognises individuals who have or have had meritorious involvement with technical aspects of QinetiQ’s business over an extended period, world leaders in their field and respected in the wider science and technology community.

Professor McDermid’s work, as Research Lead of the High Integrity Systems Engineering Group in the Department of Computer Science, focuses on systems and software engineering, emphasising safety and security-critical applications. The group uses strong industrial links to validate theory by using real-world problems in domains as diverse as defence, aerospace and healthcare.

Professor McDermid said, “It is an enormous honour to be awarded this Fellowship, and I am very pleased that my work has been recognised by an industry leader.”

Professor Hartley said: “I am extremely pleased to receive this award for my contributions to defence economics in general and in particular for my contribution to QinetiQ's research work on UK defence R&D and industrial policy.”
