Podcast dispels mental health nursing myths

Posted on 19 May 2008

The University of York is harnessing the power of the internet to dispel myths about mental health nursing.

York’s Department of Health Sciences has become the first department in the UK to use podcast technology for communication with the public and potential mental health student nurses, dispelling myths about the role of mental health nurses.

Visitors to the department’s website can now view video diaries and interviews recorded by York-based nurses, providing a glimpse into their daily lives and discussing their experiences of a demanding job which is often misunderstood.

David Harty, a mental health nurse who works on therapeutic projects at the Retreat hospital, was one of the first people to record a podcast. He said: "These films are a great opportunity to promote mental health nursing and the work that we do. I’m glad to be able to offer prospective students a chance to see what our work is really like."

Antonia Luther-Jones of the Department of Health Sciences added: "Often perceptions about what the job involves are far removed from the truth. We are keen to dispel the myth about mental health nursing, and these podcasts can help us to do that."

Alongside the podcasts already online will be a short streaming film featuring a Health Sciences lecturer. More podcasts are being prepared by the University.
