Student Drama Society scores festival hat-trick

Posted on 19 March 2008

Students from the University of York’s Drama Society are performing Steven Berkoff’s Metamorphosis at the National Student Drama Festival (NSDF) this week.

The production, by the Society which is supported by the University's Students' Union (YUSU), was initially performed in a sell-out run at the University’s ‘Drama Barn’ in the Spring term 2008, receiving great reviews. The production is directed by Alex Wright and produced by Nicola Carter. Twelve other students are involved in the play including three crew and nine actors.

I’m extremely pleased that our production has been successful

Alex Wright

Director Alex Wright said: "The selection process for the festival is highly competitive, so I’m extremely pleased that our production has been successful."

The NSDF showcases the best of student drama, from across the country. Every year professional selectors see over 150 shows to decide the ten best to be performed at the festival in Scarborough.

It is the third year running that students from the University have been chosen to perform at the festival. Past productions which featured in the event were Stone Cold Dead Serious in 2007, and Gagarin Way in 2006, both directed by William Bowry. Tony! The Blair Musical, another University production in 2007, also achieved success with the help of the NSDF as it won the NSDF Edinburgh Fringe Festival Competition. As part of the prize, the production was transferred to the Pleasance Theatre in London for a week-long run.

Metamorphosis was performed eight times, over four days, at the festival running from 15 to 21 March. It won a total of six awards including the Spotlight Award for Best Actor (for Jamie Wilkes), and the Buzz Goodbody Award for Best Director (for Alex Wright).
