Posted on 19 August 2008

The Department of Biology at the University of York has been recognised for the excellence of its graduate programmes in a new European ranking.

The Centre for Higher Education Development (CHE) in Germany ranked science departments in 250 higher education institutions in 20 European countries.

The CHE Excellence Rankings took into account four indicators — number of publications, citations, number of outstanding researchers and number of projects in the European Union’s Marie Curie research programme.

Biology at York was placed in the Excellence Group, with a gold medal for citations, silver medals for outstanding researchers and Marie Curie Programmes, as well as a bronze medal for publications.

The rankings also gave high placings to the Departments of Chemistry and Mathematics at York, with Chemistry winning one gold and two bronze medals, and Mathematics winning a gold medal.

The University’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research Professor Alastair Fitter said: "York is a research-intensive university and more than 25 per cent of our students are postgraduate. We’re very pleased to get this endorsement and recognition for the quality of our postgraduate education."
