University of York in top ten again

Posted on 21 September 2007

The University of York has maintained its position in the top rank of UK academic institutions in the new Sunday Times University Guide.

York is eighth in the newspaper's league table of more than 100 UK institutions, and its consistently high rankings for teaching demonstrate its continuing academic quality.

This is confirmation that York is firmly in the top rank of UK universities

The Sunday Times says that the University’s £500 million expansion "will transform it from one of Britain’s smaller and highly successful universities into a much bigger one, ready to scale even greater academic heights."

The Sunday Times highlights York’s excellent record on teaching quality. York, which won the Sunday Times University of the Year title in 2003, is also again ranked top university in Yorkshire. It emphasises that competition for undergraduate places at York is fierce with eight applications for each.

The University is in the top 20 nationally in the opinion of both head teachers and academics canvassed by the Sunday Times for this year's guide, while its satisfaction rating among students is also high.

The University of York's Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Trevor Sheldon said: "This is confirmation that York is firmly in the top rank of UK universities. It is a clear endorsement of our continuing commitment to academic quality, and the dedication and hard work of our staff. It is doubly pleasing to be ranked top university in Yorkshire once again. To be rated this highly in a region that contains so many fine universities is a great honour."
