Profit and sustainability meet at the University of York

Posted on 8 May 2007

Small to medium enterprises (SMEs) in York and North Yorkshire will have the chance to go green by visiting ‘a one stop shop for change’ at the University of York this summer.

They can learn how to embrace sustainable business practices at Profiting From Greener Business, a conference hosted by the University on 5 July.

As the threat of climate change grows, new market pressures from the public, the Government and, crucially, customers, are emerging so local businesses need to adapt now or be left behind.

Polar explorer and BBC broadcaster, Paul Rose, who will open the conference, said: "Embracing sustainable business practice represents both a challenge and an opportunity to increase profits. This one-stop shop for change will give SMEs key information on how to adapt to these new pressures."

It will showcase people, organisations and technologies that focus on enhancing profitability through sustainability

Adam Cartwright, a member of the University of York team which organised the event, said: "It will showcase people, organisations and technologies that focus on enhancing profitability through sustainability. We believe that it will provide a road-map to enable SMEs to achieve significant benefits."

Presentations and workshops will address a range of topics including, energy efficiency, waste management, marketing a sustainable image, legislative changes and developing sustainability policy.

The programme features speakers from Envirowise, The Chartered Institute of Marketers and Yorkshire Forward, and Paul Rose, who presents the BBC’s Meltdown and Voyage of Discovery series, will give a keynote address.

The conference is held in association with York North Yorkshire Business Environmental Forum. Full details of the programme, together with application information, can be found at www.greenerprofit.org.
