New midwifery training opportunity at York

Posted on 29 March 2007

The University of York is developing a new direct entry degree programme in midwifery, to start in October 2007.

Previously the Department of Health Sciences offered a 78 week course for qualified nurses to become midwives. The new three year full-time course, which leads to a professional qualification as a midwife, will be open to applicants with A level or equivalent qualifications.

Students will have no tuition fees to pay as these are paid by the NHS. They will also receive a means-tested bursary to support their living costs.

Programme Leader Helen Baston said: "Our philosophy is that women are central to the planning and provision of their maternity care, which takes into account their culture, hopes, expectations and clinical circumstances. We know that effective communication is central to the provision of safe and appropriate care and this will play an important role in the course."

Students will spend time in university and on placement in their ‘home’ trust, where they will experience community and hospital midwifery and nursing placements.

The new programme aims to develop midwives who are safe, clinically competent, autonomous practitioners, able to undertake the role of the lead professional for women accessing maternity care.
