York to come alive with dancing, laughter and art

Posted on 4 May 2007

The ancient thoroughfares of York will come alive on Sunday 6 May when the city's 2007 Carnival takes to the streets.

The event which is supported by the City of York Council, and the Universities of York and York St John, will showcase the skill, creativity and enthusiasm of York’s diverse community.

Partnered with CPP, Carnival 2007 promises an exciting day featuring a feast of York-based street artists; live music, dancing, sculptures and costumes will transform York.

The Carnival, which has an environmental theme, provides a platform for local artists to perform or display their work. It will also promote the arts through open workshops with local schools and educational displays for students, and other members of the community.

Highlights of the day include Bollywood choreographer, Zoobin Surty, the angelic voices of the University of York's Zamar Gospel Choir, the evergreen Blossom Street Singers and York’s premier band, Funkate. There will also be all day Morris dancing and ceilidh.

This year's York Carnival Parade will be bigger and better than ever and includes over 200 children from York schools.

The Lord Mayor of York, Cllr Janet Hopton, will take part in a balloon launch organised by CPP, aimed at raising money for the Mayor’s Charities.
