University students host national audio engineering fair

Posted on 9 May 2007

The University of York’s student section of the Audio Engineering Society (AES), the only student section of the Society in the UK, will host its society’s first national student fair at the University on 19 May.

The event will also feature a careers fair involving more than ten audio industry companies. They will offer advice on job applications ranging from design engineers to computer game audio programmers.

[As] the first student [AES] section in the UK, it is really exciting to organise and host a national event section in the UK

Tim Granger

Tim Granger, Chair of the University’s AES student section, is in his third year of a four year MEng course in Electronic Engineering with Music Technology systems. He said: "As a relatively new section, and the first student section in the UK, it is really exciting to organise and host a national event. We hope that it will encourage more students to get involved in the AES, not just those from York, but from all around the country."

The Society hopes that over 100 people will attend the fair, particularly students and those with an interest in audio from across the UK.

Since the York AES student section was established in March 2005, one of its members Ainslie Harris has been elected to the Society’s highest international student office. Rebecca Stewart, who graduated last year, won the graduate category of the Society’s international student design competition in 2006 and other members have addressed international conferences in Sweden and Paris.

Ainslie Harris, founder of the student section of the Society, graduated from the University in July last year with an Honours BEng in Electronics Engineering with Music Technology Systems. She is the European and International Regions’ Chair of the AES Student Delegate Assembly and is now studying for an MSc in International Marketing Management at The Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen.

Ainslie has been short-listed for the Student Marketer of the Year Award, part of the Scottish 2007 Marketing Excellence Awards, and believes her work with the AES at York has resulted in her selection for the competition.

Companies including Meridian Audio, Cube Media and Impact Marcom AV, will provide information on the various careers. These range from audio programming, research and testing to jobs as recording engineers. Many of the companies will also be collecting CVs from the delegates.

Representatives from several education institutions will give advice on further study in the audio engineering field, including opportunities at the University of York.

The event will be held in the Music Research Centre on the University’s Heslington campus and is free and open to the public. For more information and to register for the event, visit www.yorkaes.org (please note, registration must be made prior to attending the event).
