University of York in top ten again

Posted on 11 September 2006

The University of York has maintained its position in the top rank of UK academic institutions in the new "Sunday Times University Guide".

For the second year running, York is seventh in the newspaper's league table of more than 100 UK institutions, and its consistently high rankings for teaching demonstrate its continuing academic quality.

The Sunday Times says that competition for undergraduate places at York is fierce with eight applications for each. But it adds: "York prides itself on achieving a social balance in its intake absent from many other high-achieving universities. "

The Sunday Times Guide has confirmed that York is firmly in the top 10 of UK universities. It is another clear endorsement of our continuing academic quality

Professor Felicity Riddy

The Sunday Times says that York has a record on teaching quality bettered only by Cambridge and Loughborough in the last decade. The guide has given top ranking to 22 subjects at York, while it was also top university in Yorkshire.

The University is in the top 20 nationally in the opinion of both head teachers and academics canvassed by the Sunday Times for this year's guide, while the views of students expressed in the recent National Student Survey are also taken into account.

The University of York's Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Felicity Riddy said: "The Sunday Times Guide has confirmed that York is firmly in the top 10 of UK universities. It is another clear endorsement of our continuing academic quality."

The Sunday Times University Guide top ten this year is:

  • Cambridge
  • Oxford
  • LSE
  • Imperial
  • UCL
  • Warwick
  • YORK
  • Durham
  • Bristol
  • St. Andrews
