New Year Honours for two York social scientists

Posted on 11 January 2006

Two academics from the University of York's Department of Social Policy and Social Work will travel to Buckingham Palace in the next few months to be honoured by the Queen.

Ian Sinclair, Research Professor in the Social Work Research and Development Unit and Professor of Social Policy and Demography, Kathleen Kiernan, were both made OBEs in the New Year Honours List.

Professor Sinclair was the first co-director of the SWRDU and his work focused on foster and residential care and the movement of looked-after children. Now officially retired, he has been re-employed to work part-time on specific studies.

Professor Kiernan joined the Department of Social Policy and Social Work in October 2004. She was previously Professor of Social Policy and Demography at the London School of Economics and is still a co-director of the ESRC Centre for Analysis of Social Exclusion, at LSE.
