University of York appoints new Pro-Chancellor

Businessman Dr Robert Brech, who chairs York Science Park (Innovation Centre) Ltd, has been appointed Pro-Chancellor at the University of York.

Dr Brech, 60, who was educated at Downside School and Magdalen College, Oxford, has a background of running businesses in the medical, semi-conductor and precision engineering industries.

In the 20 years up to 2000, he held executive positions in a number of successful companies before starting a new career taking non-executive positions in management buy-outs and turn-arounds.

Under his chairmanship, York Science Park Innovation Centre has become one of the most successful in the North hosting 97 high­tech companies and spearheading the provision of new employment in the city. Dr Brech also sits on the University Council and is a board member of Science City York.

He is also chairman of Flow Group Ltd, a specialist engineering company based in Hull, Sheffield and the USA

Dr Brech said: "I am deeply honoured to be elected Pro-Chancellor of the University of York. York continues to be in the very top tier of UK universities both in teaching and research and it has been a privilege to be involved with this success. I am enjoying working with the management and academic staff of the University and I am looking forward to continuing this in my new role".

Among Dr Brech’s local interests, he is Chairman of Alne Parish Council, Treasurer of the Alne Hall Leonard Cheshire charity shops and keeps fit by playing tennis for Alne in the Hovingham League and for Tollerton in the York and District League.
