York student volunteers boosted by Nestlé Trust cash

Posted on 30 May 2006

Students from the University of York have stepped up the amount of volunteer work they do in local schools.

The University has expanded the scope of its York Students in Schools (YSIS) programme, thanks to an increase in the financial support the scheme receives from the Nestle Trust. The Trust which has backed the programme for more than a decade has increased its support to £3,000.

YSIS programme co-ordinator Lyn Whiting said: "We are thrilled that the Nestlé Trust has increased its support for the programme which started in 1994 with just a few science students and has gone from strength to strength.

"Today, there are about 600 students placed in 60 schools and colleges in York and the surrounding area and the Nestlé Trust's support over the last decade has been an integral part of our success."

Diane Calpin, Nestlé Rowntree Community Relations Manager, said: "The Nestlé Trust has always recognised the significant work that the student volunteers do to help support classroom teachers in the York area and we are delighted to be able to assist the YSIS team in taking this excellent programme forward."

Lyn Whiting also acknowledged contributions to YSIS this year from Shepherd Building Group (£1000), York Children's Trust (£600), Detica (£500), Persimmon (£250) and First York (£150).
