Beyond and Within: sculpture's new home at University of York

Posted on 6 December 2005

Joanna Mowbray's sculpture, Beyond and Within, will have a new home at the University of York from Wednesday. The sculpture, made from hot rolled steel and standing nearly 4 metres tall, will be located in the grounds of Wentworth College on the Heslington campus.

The sculpture, which was completed by the Yorkshire-based artist in 1995 as part of a series funded by a Henry Moore Foundation bursary, will be transported from the Yorkshire Sculpture Park at Bretton Country Park near Wakefield. It will be hoisted onto the lawn area in front of Wentworth College by crane under the direction of the artist.

Joanna describes the sculpture as "a large hollow-form, open at both ends to allow light to pass right through. The space inside the form, and the changes of natural light become crucial expressive elements of the sculpture. The work becomes a metaphor for a state of being, focused on creating a quiet presence within space".

Joanna Mowbray inspected a number of different sites on campus before opting for the Wentworth area for its sense of quiet.

The sculpture has been in storage for a year, but Joanna commented, "I am absolutely thrilled that the sculpture will be in a location where people will be able to see it once again and I hope they will enjoy the work."

Joanna Mowbray is also a lecturer in fine art, and has worked at Leeds Metropolitan University and the former Hull School of Art and Design (within the University of Lincoln). She is currently working on a number of private commissions.
