York students aim to win war of the Roses

Posted on 30 April 2004

Five hundred student athletes from the University of York cross the Pennines this weekend to compete at Lancaster in a major series of games ranging from rugby to croquet and fencing.

The 'Roses 2004' weekend celebrates its 40th anniversary with 95 different sporting events. The two universities have enjoyed a sporting battle every year since 1964, alternating between York and Lancaster.

Peter Croft, President of the University of York Athletics Union, said: "This is going to be one of the most exciting years ever, with a crucial decider between Lancaster and York. The count stands at 19 victories apiece over the previous 39 years, including one year when just a boat race was held, and both universities are hungry to claim the winning margin. A fete and a beer tent will add to the atmosphere.

"We're looking for support from everyone at the University of York to make sure we bring the title back to Heslington and we'll be running coaches for both competitors and supporters."

York has ambitious plans for the Roses 2005 meeting - it is hoping many former students will return to take part and relive former sporting glories.
