York tops the league on research efficiency

Posted on 15 January 2004

The University of York is the most efficient UK university in its research outputs, according to new performance indicators published by the Higher Education Funding Council for England.

The indicators reveal outstanding value for money in research for York. Research grants and contracts earned per proportion of academic staff costs are higher at York than at Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College, the LSE and University College London.

York has the highest research grant income per academic staff member in the higher education system. It also scores well on the other indicators.

There are four indicators:

  • the proportion of PhDs per academic staff costs;
  • the share of research contracts awarded per academic staff costs;
  • the share of PhDs awarded in relation to the university's funding council income;
  • and the share of research contracts awarded in relation to the university's funding council income.

The top ten research efficient universities are:

  1. York
  2. Loughborough
  3. Oxford
  4. Aberystwyth
  5. LSE
  6. Cranfield
  7. Durham
  8. Cambridge
  9. East Anglia
  10. Southampton

"York is known for its academic excellence and for its value for money," said Professor Andy Ellis, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research. "The very high rate of research income per academic reflects the large number of people engaged in top level research at York. It is encouraging that excellence and efficiency can go hand-in-hand."
