University manual staff awarded for Going the Extra Mile

Posted on 27 April 2004

Almost 70 Manual Staff at the University who have had their work rewarded have been invited to a reception on 28 April to celebrate their achievement. All of the staff have been recognised for their exceptional performance by University's GEM (Going the Extra Mile) Award scheme.

Any member of manual staff from Commercial Services; Environmental Services - our Cleaning Staff, and Catering and Bars, Security, Portering, Mailroom and Car Park, Estates, Sports Centre and others not in Facilities Management, can be nominated for an award by another member of staff at the University. To date, there have been 23 nominations for individuals, and seven for teams. Staff who are successfully nominated receive a £100 award.

Exceptional performance of staff may be demonstrated in more than one way, including providing a service which is consistently above the norm; exceptional performance in handling a crisis, and a unique contribution to the achievement of team aims.

Denise Kristiansen, Julie O'Brien and Michelle Spofforth, a team working in the University's Cafe Barista, received an award after being nominated by a member of staff who valued their service in the cafe.

"We're really pleased to have received a GEM Award," they said. "It's nice to know that our customers appreciate the effort we put into our jobs."

"The GEM Award is a real opportunity for staff at the University to show their manual staff colleagues that they really notice the good work they do," said Liz Critchley, Personnel Manager, who administers the scheme. "The commitment by manual staff to their jobs makes a real difference to other staff at the University, and it is nice to be able to show them that this is recognised."

Notes to editors:

  • The GEM award scheme was set up in April 2003 as part of the University's Rewarding and Developing Staff initiative. This is part of a much wider project to reward and develop staff funded by the Higher Education Funding Council of England (HEFCE).
