North Yorkshire businesses benefit from University's new IT academy

Posted on 8 October 2004

The University of York has become a Microsoft IT Academy. Next week it will welcome 10 delegates from North Yorkshire businesses for its first training course.

"The Microsoft IT Academy Program supports academic institutions in developing a highly trained global workforce for the 21st century" said Programme Manager, Amanda Selvaratnam.

"From the desktop to networking and programming, students and employers worldwide look to Microsoft IT Academies for the latest technologies, in-demand skills, and the assurance of the Microsoft quality standard."

On Monday 11 October the University of York Microsoft IT Academy will run its first training course, the Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician. Ten delegates from North Yorkshire businesses are already registered on this course with a further five registered for the second course in 2005.

"This course is intended for new entrants and career changers new to the IT industry," said Amanda. "It has been developed to address a growing need industry-wide for qualified help-desk professionals. We believe it will provide one of the most effective ways for people to gain the skills and recognition needed in this field."

Membership of the academy entitles the University of York to run any Microsoft Professional Certified training course and provides substantial discounts on course materials, software and licences.

The University of York is the first academic institution in York to obtain Academy status and with it the authorisation to run IT Professional courses.
