Bicycle lending scheme for King's Manor staff and students

Posted on 11 May 2004

Students and staff at the University of York may now borrow a bicycle to commute between King's Manor in the city centre and the Heslington campus.

On Wednesday 12 May, the new lending scheme will be launched at the University's King's Manor in Exhibition Square, by daily cycle commuters Dr Peter Thompson (Department of Psychology) and Jane Grenville (Department of Archaeology) who will lead King's Manor students on a ceremonial opening circuit round the courtyard of the building.

Twelve bicycles may be loaned freely to the 350 staff and students based at King's Manor for the journey between the two sites. Not only will the use of the bicycles make for a faster, healthier journey using York's off-road cycle routes, but will give car-users the opportunity to leave their vehicles behind.

Funding for the bicycles, and the 50-capacity secure bicycle storage building has been provided by a 50% grant from the Department of Transport's New Cycling Initiatives Fund. The University's Sustainable Transport Fund supplied the balance.
