Dale Sanders elected a Fellow of the Royal Society

Posted on 14 May 2001

Professor Dale Sanders of York's Biology Department has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, the premier honour for the scientists of Britain and the Commonwealth.

Professor Sanders graduated in Biology from York in 1974 and went on to do a PhD at Cambridge. He then worked at Yale University before returning to become a Lecturer at the University of York in 1983. He was promoted to Professor in 1992.

His leads one of York's major research groups in its Plant Laboratory. The group researches how plants obtain nutrients from outside via the plasma membrane which surrounds their cells. They study how plant cells respond to changes in environment and how they store the nutrients they acquire. An understanding of the way plants transport nutrients and what stimulates them to respond to certain conditions is crucial in areas such as improving crop yields in agriculture.

Election to the Fellowship of the Royal Society is recognised worldwide as a sign of the highest regard in science. Candidates must be proposed by at least six existing Fellows and are assessed by Sectional Committees in each major field of science.
