The rights of minorities: are they different in West and Eastern Europe?

Posted on 2 May 2001

An examination of the differences in rights of minorities in West and Eastern Europe will be the focus of this year's JB and WB Morrell Memorial Address on Toleration at the University of York. The lecture will be given by Canadian philosopher Will Kymlicka.

Currently Professor of Philosophy at Queen's University, Canada, Will Kymlicka is the author of numerous books on culture, community and citizenship. Perhaps his best-known work, Multicultural Citizenship, was awarded the Macpherson Prize by the Canadian Political Science Association and the Bunche Award by the American Political Science Association.

The annual Morrell lecture series is intended to make a contribution to thought on the subject of Toleration. The series of speakers is highly distinguished - among other eminent previous lecturers have been Lord Scarman, Baroness Warnock, Sir Edward Heath, Dr George Carey, Professor Bernard Williams, Helena Kennedy QC, Rabbi Julia Neuberger, and Janet Suzman.

The title chosen by Will Kymlicka is Tolerance, justice and security: comparing minority rights in the West and Eastern Europe. The lecture will be given in the University of York's Physics lecture theatre P/X001 from 8pm on Tuesday 29 May. The lecture is free and open to all.
