Later life is fun, say women

Posted on 2 July 2001

Later life is enriching for many women, in spite of the difficulties which they may have encountered in earlier stages of life. This is the finding by researchers in the University of York's department of Social Policy and Social Work.

Family and social relationships, access to adequate services and facilities, and participation in leisure activities were all identified as important in maintaining quality of life for older women.

How does ethnicity affect women's experience as they age? Researchers have been working with a range of women from different ethnic backgrounds, many from West Yorkshire, to help answer this question.

Professor Mary Maynard, one of the research team said, "One of the aims in conducting this research is to re-evaluate the stereotypes which many people hold about old age."

On the 5 July, those women who participated in the project are invited to lunch and a meeting at the University to discuss the research findings, followed by a tour of the city. It is hoped that the findings of the research can inform future government policy aimed at older people.
