Global students taught by experts from 11 leading universities

Posted on 19 October 2001

Studying at an e-University is about to become a reality with the launch of a highly innovative degree programme.

Working with its partners in the Worldwide Universities Network (WUN), the University of York has reached agreement with the eUniversity to provide a masters course in Public Policy and Management.

Students from across the globe will access learning materials and tutorial support developed and delivered by tutors in this new worldwide graduate school established by WUN.

The MA in Public Policy and Management (Social Protection) will be developed and managed by the University of York, which will act as 'host' institution for the course on behalf of the Worldwide Universities Network. Other member universities of the Network will contribute to the development of learning materials on different modules.

The Worldwide Universities Network is a collaboration of six of Britain's leading universities - Bristol, Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield, Southampton and York - and five in the US - the Universities of California at San Diego, Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Washington at Seattle, Wisconsin-Madison and The Pennsylvania State University.

This agreement is expected to provide a model for other distance learning e-courses, in which different members of the Worldwide Universities Network will act as hosts for some courses, whilst contributing to the teaching of others across the Network.

The MA in Public Policy and Management is designed for senior officials in public services who deal with social security issues. The course aims to develop students' management skills and policy knowledge. The course is based on York's highly successful MA in Public Services Management for UK civil servants, but new modules foe international use will be developed by York and WUN partners.

Graduates of the distance learning course will be awarded a University of York degree.
