Politics continues York's superb teaching record with another perfect score

Posted on 9 November 2000

The Department of Politics at the University of York has scored 24 out of 24 in its official Subject Review (formerly known as Teaching Quality Assessment), which was carried out this week.

The score is York's fifth 'perfect' score and continues the University's superb marks for Subject Review, which have led to its dominating the university teaching 'league tables' in recent years.

The Subject Review process measures the quality of teaching in every subject in every university. York has been ranked second out of 98 UK universities for these scores so far.

The Review team from the Quality Assurance Agency visited the Department of Politics from 6 to 9 November. Their visit was a formal process which looked at six aspects: curriculum design; teaching, learning and assessment; student progression and achievement; student support; learning resources; and quality management and enhancement. Each area was awarded a score out of 4 (total possible marks: 24). The Department submitted a document in advance which detailed aims and objectives in each of the six areas. As part of their audit, the assessors sat in on lectures, seminars and tutorials.

"We are delighted with this affirmation of the high quality of our teaching programmes. It is a tribute to the dedication and skill of all our staff and students in the department and continues York's superb record in teaching quality," said Head of Department, Dr Mark Evans.
