York teenagers discover university life in Green Apples scheme

Posted on 14 December 2000

Teenagers from three York schools will find out more about universities at a day conference at the University of York on Monday 18 December.

The conference will give them information on career choices, applying to university, study skills and what university life is like. About 80 Year 11 pupils from Burnholme, Lowfield and Huntington schools are expected to attend. The conference is organised under the auspices of the Green Apples scheme, which seeks to raise the aspirations of pupils whose families do not have a history of going to University. All the higher education providers in York take part in the scheme.

Claire Forsman, Schools Liaison Officer at the University of York explains, "The pupils involved in the conference were the first cohort into the programme two years ago. They have had day and residential visits to local higher education institutions, and will now be turning their attention to post-16 preparation and choices."

Reporters and photographers are welcome to attend part of the day. Please ring Claire Forsman on 01904 433197 for further details.
