Chemistry Network wins Green Apple Award

Posted on 8 August 2000

A prestigious national award has been presented to the Green Chemistry Network at the University of York for its work to promote environmental best practice in the chemical community.

The Network was runner-up in the National Services and Utilities section of the annual Green Apple Environment Awards, organised by The Green Organisation at the Café Royal, London on Tuesday 1 August 2000. The National Award winners received their trophies from actress Cherie Lunghi.

The Green Apple Environment Awards are presented annually to local authorities, industry and commercial organisations who are working to preserve and protect the environment. The Green Chemistry Network was established in 1998 to provide a forum for academic and industrial chemists with an interest in using environmentally friendly or sustainable chemistry. The various programmes of the Network include training courses, conferences, producing educational resources and promoting the sharing of green ideas and technology between academia and industry.

Commenting on the Award, Green Chemistry Network manager Mike Lancaster said: "It was a special honour to receive this Award on behalf of the GCN since it was recognition from outside the science community that chemistry can be carried out in an environmentally benign way. There is a rapidly growing number of chemists who believe that we can continue to have the benefits that modern society expects the chemical industry to provide but without the adverse environmental side effects we have sometimes seen in the past. This is a tonic for all of us."
