York retains second place in universities teaching league

Posted on 4 August 1999

The Daily Telegraph's university league table published today (4 August) keeps York in second place after Cambridge and ahead of Oxford, Durham and all the London colleges.

The table is based on official assessments of teaching quality in the UK's 98 universities. The programme of assessments is ongoing, with several subjects assessed in all universities each year. The next subjects to be assessed at York will be Physics, Nursing, Bioscience and Psychology.

The Telegraph's table is intended as a guide to student applicants, showing which universities score highly for the quality of their teaching.

The top ten is:

  • Cambridge 94.7% (94.7% of subjects assessed so far have scored at least 22 out of 24)
  • York 84.6
  • Imperial 83.3
  • Oxford 80.0
  • LSE 77.8
  • Durham 65.2
  • Nottingham 64.0
  • UCL 63.6
  • Warwick 62.5
  • Lancaster 60.0
  • Loughborough 60.0
