Teaching handbook for lecturers launched

Posted on 13 September 1999

A teaching handbook for new lecturers, edited by the University of York's director of staff development Dr Stephanie Marshall, was launched at the University this week.

The book, entitled A Handbook for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education: Enhancing Academic Practice, is designed to accompany new academic staff development programmes in universities across the UK.

The book offers new academics insights on developing teaching, learning and assessment skills, continuing professional development, and the distinctive features of different academic disciplines. Chapters have been contributed by recognised experts from across the higher education sector and the book is edited by Stephanie Marshall from York, Heather Fry, a senior lecturer at the Royal London School of Medicine and Dentistry, and Dr Steve Ketteridge, head of staff development at Queen Mary and Westfield College, London.

"This book comes at a time of increasing professionalism amongst teachers throughout British universities. I hope all academics can enjoy and benefit from the handbook," said Stephanie Marshall. "It is perhaps fitting that a handbook on teaching in higher education should be launched at the University of York which, together with Cambridge, has achieved such stunning results in official assessments of teaching quality,"

Notes to editors:

  • The National Inquiry into Higher Education (the Dearing Report) encouraged the development of accredited programmes for university staff. The book is designed to accompany such programmes.
  • New and existing programmes will be eligible for accreditation by the national Institute for Learning and Teaching, launched in York in June 1999, which is based on York Science Park.
