University opens 'Quiet Place' in busy campus

Posted on 24 June 1999

The 'Quiet Place' at the University of York will be opened on 24 June by University Chancellor Dame Janet Baker. A highly unusual venture, the Quiet Place will form a place for contemplation, meditation and reflection in a busy, sometimes stressful and highly-charged academic atmosphere.

The Quiet Place is in the beautiful and peaceful location of a Georgian gazebo and walled garden in the Heslington campus. The two-storey gazebo has one room on each floor: the lower room is for silent reading and reflection by individuals; the upper room can be booked by small groups for quiet prayer or reflection. No music, chanting or loud talking will be permitted.

"The Quiet Place is available to those of any faith or of none and will be a valuable opportunity for the University community and other visitors to campus", said Dr William Sheils of the Quiet Place management group. "It provides a visible expression of the importance which any such community places on spiritual values and personal development".

The project has been supported by many local organisations and received early support from the local Society of Friends. Many individuals have also donated funds to the venture. So that it retains its inclusive appeal, there are no symbols of worship, and in keeping with the original vision the design has used natural materials and individual craftsmanship wherever possible.
