Student rooms to get telephones

Posted on 29 September 1997

As part of a major programme to improve student accommodation and facilities at York, the University has signed a deal with ACC Telecom to fit telephones in all study bedrooms.

Beginning with student residences near Heslington village and James College on campus, the programme will extend to all colleges over a period of five years. The installation of telephones will become part of the refurbishment project which will also see a large majority of bedrooms on campus becoming ensuite.

Students will be able to make internal University calls at no charge. For a flat rate fee of £30 a year they will be able to have incoming calls and voice mail. Students will also be able to open an account with ACC for outgoing calls.

"This project will provide a valuable service to students," said Dr Andy Macdonald, Director of Facilities Management. "The rates for additional telephone services are extremely reasonable, and we hope that the installation of these lines could lead to the provision of dial-up data services too."

The first personal student phones will be operational by the end of October. Thereafter the service will be implemented as colleges are upgraded. Conference visitors resident on campus during University vacations will be able to purchase special phone cards in order to use the phones.
