The LibInspo winning student idea is here - body doubling spaces in the Fairhurst and Morrell.

Earlier this year Jocelyn Macnab, a Philosophy student, won our LibInspo competition to improve the library with her Study Buddy proposal: an app that would pair people for body doubling as a way to increase the quality of their academic study.

Work is still underway to create an app for booking a space but we have now implemented the idea in the Library. We have designated two spaces in the library as Study Doubling areas:

  • 6 desks are available on the Fairhurst floor 2,  in between LFA/214 and the lift area
  • 10 desks are available at the back of room LMO/211 on Morrell, floor 2

What is Study Doubling?

Study Doubling (or Body Doubling) is when two (or more) people work side by side without necessarily collaborating. It’s not about brainstorming or bouncing ideas around. It’s about showing up, being present, and doing the work while someone else is doing theirs. It may sound simple, but the effects can be powerful. Just having another person in your virtual or physical space provides an accountability anchor that helps keep you on task. The key is the silent accountability and the sense of companionship. Two people work side by side in the same room.
