The department's speech articulation lab opened its doors to colleagues across the University, demonstrating ultrasound tongue imaging and inviting new interdisciplinary collaborations.

On 13 July 2026, the Department of Language and Linguistic Science hosted a showcase event for its speech articulation lab, known as ArticuLab. The event was organised by George Bailey, Senior Lecturer in Sociolinguistics, together with Amelia Gully, Lecturer in Speech Science, Catherine Laing, Senior Lecturer in Developmental Linguistics, and Marina Cantarutti, Research and Innovation Associate. The team introduced staff and postgraduate researchers from across the University to the lab's facilities and the research they make possible.

Based in Vanbrugh College, the ArticuLab houses equipment for studying articulatory phonetics and language variation. The showcase focused on ultrasound tongue imaging, which captures how the tongue moves during speech, alongside the lab's electromagnetic articulograph, a system that tracks parts of the vocal tract in three dimensions.

Attendees included colleagues from departments such as Education, Psychology and Hull York Medical School, reflecting the event's aim of building interdisciplinary connections. As well as demonstrations of the equipment in action, the session gave people the chance to try the technology first-hand and to discuss possibilities for future collaboration.

The lab is open to use by staff and PhD students, and for dissertation research by postgraduate taught and keen undergraduate students. Training sessions can be arranged for those interested in using the facilities.
