Amanda's work as a public health nurse, policy maker and researcher has been focused on early prevention to improve maternal, child and adolescent health.

This includes incorporating factors within people’s environment or their ‘social ecology’ that affects physical and mental health outcomes.

Could you please tell us what work you do in the field of mental health?

My work on maternal, child and adolescent health has been focused on the intersection of mental health with sexual and reproductive health and violence prevention and the impact of relationships, the family, institutions and the environment.

What do you find most rewarding and inspiring in this work?

Being able to highlight issues that need to be addressed and training the next generation of public health researchers.

What is the most challenging or complicated aspect of this work?

Getting funders and policy makers to take note of what needs to change and be addressed. 

What impact do you hope your work is having - or can potentially have?

To reduce inequity in service provision.

Could you share with us one piece of advice that you follow for your own mental health?

Keep the heart in mind.
