IMRY Associate Director for the Sciences Dr Scott Cairney has been awarded the Senior Translational Research Award by the British Association for Psychopharmacology (BAP) in their 2025 Psychopharmacology Awards.

The award recognises the important contributions Dr Cairney has made in his academic career to-date in improving understanding of the neurocognitive mechanisms linking sleep to mental health and translating this fundamental scientific knowledge into societal benefits. Most recently, he secured a grant of €2M from the European Research Council (ERC) which is supporting research into the role of sleep in reconciling traumatic memories, with the aim of advancing our understanding of anxiety and mood disorders.

Weighing into the decision of the BAP awarding panel was also Dr Cairney’s teaching achievements, including helping to initiate a new MSc at the University of York on the Neuroscience of Mental Health, and his contributions towards advancing public understanding and dialogue around sleep and mental health, including radio and TV appearances and talks to local schools.

Dr Cairney will be presented with the award at the BAP Summer Meeting at the University of Manchester, on Sunday 29th June 2025 and he will also give a short presentation about his work.
