Placement test instructions

Before you begin your course at the University of York, you must complete a placement test. This will help us understand your level of English.

The test takes about 60 minutes to complete. You will need to answer a number of questions, so we recommend that you:

• Use a computer, laptop or tablet and not your phone;
• Set aside enough time (an hour);
• Work alone in a quiet place.

The result of the test will not have any effect on your place on this course or your achievement and certificate. It will only inform your tutors.

Please work alone and do not use any help (eg. a dictionary, internet search or any other person's knowledge).

Important instructions before you start

As you will need to make a recording, please make sure that you use a computer,laptop or tablet with a microphone.

You can use any programme on your computer to make the recording.

You will only get the speaking question in Part 5, but you can practise making a recording before you start the test. You can decide whether to make an audio or video recording.

• For audio, we recommend your default recorder (Voice Recorder on Windows, Voice Memos on Mac);
• For video, we recommend using either your default recorder (eg. Photo Booth on Mac) or the recording function of an online meeting tool (eg. Google Meet or Zoom).

To access the test, please follow the link that you had been sent via email.

Do not share this link with anyone. It will only work once.

Are you accessing the test from China?

If Google services are limited in your area, you will need to be connected to the University of York VPN service to access the test.
